If you read USA Today, you may have noticed the humorous drawing of Jay Leno accom panying the June 6 cover story about Leno's becoming the new host of (he "Tonight Show." That was drawn by the new USA Today graphic artist, Ron Coddington, son of Ronald and Carol Coddington of Columbus. Alan Pruettc, Carol's boss, said he has been trying to get Ron Coddington to redraw the Bulletin's "Curb Reporter" logo for some time. Coddington recently sent Pruettc a signed copy of the June 6 USA Today with a note, "I don't want the Bulletin job!" He doesn't know what he's missing. The visitor's guidebook, Touring the Western North Carolina Backroads, has been selling at a brisk pace at the Tryon-Thermal Belt Chamber of Commerce office. You can reserve a copy for $14.95. N C 28782 McMillian To Challenge Smith; Two File In Tryon Only one candidate had filed for one of the two open scats on the Tryon Town Council as of Tuesday morning, three days before the deadline. Councilman William A. McFarland Jr. was "80 percent sure" he would, but had not filed for re-election by Tues day morning. The deadline for filing a can didacy for office in Tryon, Columbus and Saluda is noon on Friday. Councilman Ellis Fincher had filed for re-election to the council and Mayor Bob Neely had filed for re-election as mayor. No other candidates had filed in Tryon. Because he was top vote getter. Councilman Warren Carson's term of office contin ues to the next election. McFarland said he wanted to wait until Friday to see if any one else does file for office before deciding. McFarland also said he wanted to discuss the direction the town is taking with Town Manager Matthew Dolge. "We have a good board now, and I would like to continue that," he said. He said if no one files, or if someone "we don't need" files, he definitely will be a candidate. In Columbus, there was much more interest. JULY 31,1991 20C Prr ( op\ Downpour's Damage The Mill House Cafe at Melrose Junction was carried down hill into a stream bed when the bank it was sitting on eroded Monday night. The structure appeared to be undamaged, but hauling it back onto level land was going to be a project. A downpour of 2.88 inches was recorded overnight in Tryon. N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance workers were clearing several small slides and washes around Polk County Tuesday morning, and removing several trees downed along Hwy. 176. The worst damage was done on the lower end of Holbert's Cove Road, where the flash flood waters tore a hole in the road. Highway maintenance chief Don Ruff said the road will likely be closed for two weeks. Two slides also closed Fork Creek Road but were being cleared away Tuesday morning. Communication: Red Fox Sold To Our Members: We are told by the Resolution Trust Corporation that The Red Fox Country Club has been sold for a price in excess of $2.6 million. The closing will take place in about two weeks. The buyer is Alan McCain, owner of The Green Park Inn and Golf Course in Blowing Rock, N.C. Your membership and pledges and the escrowed funds (including interest less expenses) will be returned in August when our U.S. Treasury bills mature and our records can be closed.
